Illustrator is embedding linked file sizes

For some reason, I just simply can't find out what to do about this...I have a map that's 120 x 30 - I have a number of linked items, complex in their own right, but for some reason, I can't seem to get the file to save without embedding the file sizes of the linked images.

The map file on it's own is about 3 MB...once I include all of my linked images, the file size jumps to a whopping 60 MB...what's going on? What good is a links panel if the image size is embedded in the file size but still missing the linked images if you try to open the file without them?

Can anyone out there give me a clue to how I might remedy this? I need, Deke's home number!

Did you possibly check the box which says Include Linked Files when saving the file? In a word, don't do that. It causes the linked file to be embedded. You might also need to turn off Create PDF Enabled in the save menu as well.

Thanks a million...turning off the Include Linked Files was a given...the turning off of the Create PDF was the key. AWESOMENESS kudos to you, Larry! Thanks. Now my file is a manageable 14 MB...I did do some curvy roads and railroad tracks in the map file that added the additional file size.

You're welcome. Remember that you will need to create a PDF version if you want to use the file in another software like InDesign.

I'm not sure if this helps now, but I had the same issue and I just closed and open illustrator again and it solved the problem. Hope it works for you too. 🙂
