Illustrator missing elements when saving as pdf

I have an artboard with many elements both graphic and text on it. When I save as a pdf only one set of text is saved. When I look at the illustrator file, that text is in a black box. If I open the AI file in photoshop, again only the text in that black box appears. I can't select the box. Help.

Are the many elements inside the artboard? Or does the artboard only contain that set of text?

There are many elements in the file. Maybe I have some how only selected the text as the artboard but am unsure how to select the whole design. I am very new to illustrator.

So this affects only text?

Is there a warning when saving the file? Something about fonts that can't be embedded?

Make sure you see the artboard(s): View > Show Artboards (if they are hidden).

To create an artboard that has all your elements:

Select > Select All

Object > Artboards > Fit to Selected Art.
