Illustrator selecting multiple objects

I have have created an object using lines that creates a cube.  I am trying to select one side of it so that I can paint it.  When ever I select one of the lines that is not associated with any other sides of the cube, it selects a second side.  How can I select  just one side of the cube without selecting the other sides.  They are ungrouped.
