Question

Illustrator won't manually scale text in text boxes

This happens to me intermitantly and I can't figure out why. I can normally an do a manual scale of a text box (shift drag or shift option drag a box handle) and the box and text will scale proportionally. Now, the box will scale, but the text remains the same size. I've shut down all other programs, I've restarted my Mac. Same problem. I'm using CS2 on a Mac Pro desktop with 230 GB free. Keyboard is corded, so it's not a keyboard battery issue. Another and possibly related problem is that sometimes I can't scale text or object manually, proportionally at all. Usually I can do the shift drag or option shift drag and it works perfectly. But sometimes it won't scale proportionally. What up?

That did it, Wade. Embarassed to say that I've been using Illustrator for years and never realized the difference between area text and point text. Guess I have to put down The Fountainhead and pick up the Illustrator manual again. Thanks.

Because the text that you can scale is not area type it is point type it is not in a text frame. What you are seeing its the bounding box.

you can scale area text ( type in a text frame) but you have to use something or then the selection or direct select tool, such as the scale tool or transform.
