Installing Java SE 6 Runtime in 2018

My current Mac operating system is El Capitan 10.11.6. When trying to open Illustrator CS 6, I receive a message that says "To open Adobe Illustrator you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime. Click 'More Info' to visit the legacy Java SE 6 download website." When I do this I am brought to a page on Apple's website titled "Download Java for OS X 2017-001." On this screen there is a box that says "Download icon" but this is not a clickable download box; rather a web page placeholder or something along that line. When I contacted Apple, their feeling was that this was an older page and was no longer usable. I know that Oracle also no longer supplies downloads for this version of Java. I have seen this question posed on this forum previously but these questions and answers were several years old. Has anyone encountered this issue in the recent past and been able to solve it? Thanks!

    Christina,

You should be able to get round the issue altogether without the legacy version (and its security implications), by following this:

    http://oliverdowling.com.au/2014/03/28/java-se-8-on-mac-os-x/

It is even more thoroughly described in this thread, see post #3 on by gator soup:

Here are download sites for Java SE6 if you wish/must:

    Win:

    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/java-archive-downloads-javase6-419409.html

    Mac:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572

Some have found that the page may turn up blank to start with, so it may be necessary to reload the page.

Others have found that it may depend on browser. Specifically, a switch from Safari has solved it in one case.

Answering my own question that I just posted!: After again searching through previous forums, I tried the suggestion of changing my browser from Safari to Firefox and was successfully able to download Java SE 6 runtime. I hope this is still helpful to anyone else encountering this problem at this point!
