Setting up bleeds - Illustrator

Hi!

So this is probably an easy question/answer - but I just want to make sure I'm setting up the bleeds correctly in Illustrator.  My document is 48 inches in width and 36 inches in height.  Do I set the top, bottom, right and left ALL to 0.125 inches?

THANKS!

Erin

Ok - so I DO have another question!

What if instead of placing a stock image (black) as my background - I just fill it in with black from the color picker?  I went ahead and did that - after I set up the bleed measurements - but now the black only fills in my ACTUAL document size (36x48).  It doesn't meet the bleed lines.  Any idea on how I can extend the black all the way to the bleeds?

    THANKS!!!

Did you draw a rectangle? Can't you just extend the rectangle to the bleed? Maybe it is time for a screenshot so we can see what you are doing and where you are actually having a problem.

yes set all 4 sides to .125" for 1/8" bleeds to use the automatic marks.

Alternativley you can make your document for example 49" x 37", and draw your own marks for custom marks. You can draw a rectanlge 48" x 36" , then use effect >> crop marks. You can object >> expand appearance incase you want to customize the length of your marks..

Awesome - thanks!  Can I ask you one more stupid question?  I then need to extend my background image all the way to the edge of the bleed, correct?  I did that and since my background is black (100% opacity), all I can see is the edge of the red bleed line - and not the "empty" space between the actual size of my document and the bleed line.  Maybe I will just have to lighten the background a bit while I create the document?  Again - I know this is a stupid question - but I am new to Illustrator and trying to figure this out on my own!

    Thanks again -

Yes, you extend the background image to the bleed line - that is the purpose, so that when the image is cropped, there is no scraggily white edge in case the the cut isn't perfect. Not sure what you mean by the "empty" space between the actual edge of the document and the bleed line, but if you are taking the black (which is the background color) to the bleed line, then you should be good.

Ask the print service provider. Depending on how exactly your artwork will be printed, it might require different setups.
