Strange Minus Front behavior

I'm trying to knock a text block out of a rectangular shape. The text is outlined and converted to a compound path, placed in front of the rectangle, and MINUS FRONT is applied. The rectangle then has the text paths knocked out, but there are phantom color areas linking letter shapes. Moving individual points makes these "phantoms" disappear. They seem to be more of a glitch than an actual part of any shape, but we're concerned about these glitches coming through on a mechanicalized file. Any ideas?
