Question

Stroking a placed ai file

Is there a way to stroke an ai or vector file you place into a new file? I don't want a frame - I want a stroke. I have tried adding a stroke in the appearance panel and then adding outline object, but nothing happens.

no, it won't update if you embed it. but if you don't embed it, the frame is the only thing you can stroke, since nothing else exists as vectors in the document.

No. You can either edit the original file or draw the shape around the placed image and set the stroke adjustments. If needed, you can create Clipping Mask and set its stroke, but anyway, this will be a new shape in the new file.

I tried creating a mask, but I was obviously doing it wrong - it just disappeared and I could not get a stroke on that either. What would the proper workflow be?

You just did not finish the process. Clipping Mask is a "service" object so it loses its attributes. You have to select it by Direction Tool (white arrow) and set the stroke as you need. You can do this easily in Outline mode

Why are you placing an ai file into another ai file? If you copy and paste from the first file to the second then the pasted art retains the full edibility that it originally had. This, of course assumes that both files are saved as ai files.

If you save AI files into your library and then drag them into another file they act as if placed. Also, if you place the file and then edit it it will update
