Text Disappears (changes color) when Outlined

Community Beginner ,

Working on this file (some elements from a different designer) and when I outline the text it goes to black (disappears).

I figured out how to fix it, but I want to know why text shows white on the screen, but when selected shows it is black in the pallet box, no transparency or opacity changes. It's very possible we have been having text missing from files and not realizing it when converting for the printer.

Thanks in advance.

There are black fills applied behind the curtain.

To solve it, just select one of the "bad" groups, go to the Layers palette, expand the group entries, target the text objects, open the Appearance palette, double click on the Character item and then change the fill colour from black to white.

Can you please post a screenshot with the Appearance palette and Layers palette, both fully expanded (while the text object is selected, of course)?

Kurt,

Thanks, I figured that part out. Curious why it displays white?

I'm not quite sure how that constructional defect was introduced in your sample file. It may be a combination of applying and changing or removing fill colours at different levels (character, group or even layer level). Obviously, at some point something got flubbed.

For example, if you select one of the problematic type objects, go to the Colour palette and then drag the colour slider just a bit to the left, the text colour immediately changes to black. The same happens if you just change the mode from greyscale to CMYK in the flyout menu of the Colour palette.

It seems to be pretty difficult to understand this misbehaviour. At least, it would require some more careful investigation to unravel it.
