Hi All,
I am recreating someones logo in AI to bring into AE to create a 3D object with a plugin. The plugin using AI files and converts the vectors into 3D objects.
I am trying to convert text that have strokes into paths (text and stroke). I seen a video where they expanded the text and it gave the option for the stroke as well. But the expand option is greyed out. That expand appearance is not, but that doesn't turn the storke around the text into paths.
What am I doing wrong? I need the entire logo to be paths.
Thank you!
Todd

Converting Text into Shapes using Expand or using Type > Create Outlines will convert the text characters into shapes but the stroke will still as it is.
To convert stroke into shape, after creating outlines or expand you can use one of these methods:
- Select text and use Object > Path > Outline Stroke
or - Object > Expand again.
NOTE: The stroke will be separate shape so you can copy shape and merge it or to do what you want.

In addition to what Omar said: The fact that Expand Appearance is available, while Expand is not, indicates that an effect has been applied, or some other attribute has been added via the Appearance panel. For example, the stroke may have been added to the type object, rather than to the characters. Default behavior would apply a stroke to the characters of a selected type object. If the stroke was applied at the Type level, expanding the appearance would yield two type objects, one with the original fill, and one with the stroke. If this was your result, you could add the desired fill color to the stroked object, then expand; or add the desired stroke to the filled object, then expand that.
If you had type with fill and stroke applied in the default fashion, Expand would be the available function and would give you grouped objects of each letter as a compound path, with original fill and stroke.
As Omar said, Type > Create Outlines should get you where you want to go, barring other complications.

Thank you! Both you and Omar have helped immensely. I'll be trying this out when I get back in.
