Unable to create custom shortcuts on Illustrator 24.0.1 on macOS 10.15.2

I have problems with keyboard shortcuts for arranging objects. In Illustrator 2020 version 24.0.1 it is even worse than the 2019-version.

I can't make my own shortcuts -  Illustrator just doesn't respond at all even if I have pressed in a new code. And the standard shortcuts are changed in this new 2020 Illustrator to match another shortcut which shots down the program(!!!!!)...

Can anyone help?! I use this feature very much and I feel handicapped, as I have to work my way around it. This should really not be an issue for a professional program!!!

I work with a Danish keyboard - as all Danes do - maybe this is the key to the problem? I work with a new iMac MacOS 10.15.2.

Hi Louise,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing with Illustrator. This is unusual, I would request if you can share a few more details and try the steps suggested below:

  1. When you reset the shortcut and enter the new code, does Illustrator Crashes or quits?
  2. Have you tried a different combination?
  3. Please close all the applications and reboot and only launch Illustrator and then try making changes. This is just to ensure no other application is utilizing the shortcut keys.
  4. If nothing helps, you can try resetting the preferences for Illustrator by following the steps below and then try creating the shortcuts again and see if it works:
  • Close Illustrator.
  • Click on the Finder icon on the dock, choose Go on the top> Go To Folder.
  • In the Go To Folder dialog box, type "~/Library". Click Go.
  • Open the Preferences Folder > rename the Illustrator  24 Settings folder to Illustrator  24 Settings folder.old
  • Under Preferences, Open Adobe folder and rename Adobe Illustrator folder to Adobe Illustrator.old
  • Go back to library->open caches->rename  com.adobe.illustrator to com.adobe.illustrator.old
  • Go back to library->open application support-> open adobe->rename the Illustrator  24 folder to Illustrator  24 folder.old

Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings and Illustrator will launch with default settings. This way all your old settings will be saved in .old folders and Illustrator will recreate new folders with default settings.

Regards

Rishabh

Hello Rishabh
No, Illustrator doesn't crash, it just does not do anything.

OKAY, now I tried some other combinations:
Example: place in front: command, shift, Ø
Something DOES happen, but it only moves forward (one step at a time)

Then I tried to use the code place in front: command, alt, shift, Ø
THEN IT WORKS!

BUT the move forward does not work with the code command, Ø

Place in back does NOT work with command, shift, Å
But it DOES work with command, alt, shift, Å

Yet moving backwards does NOT work with command, Å

Well but it is not the most succesfull way of doing it… since I use these combinations in InDesign (which works just fine!)

You should know, that I have had this issue since I switched to CC a year ago - with three different computers (iMac and MacBook on up-to-date OS) I have used the control click dropdown window and chosen bring to front instead (which is a lot more complicated than using keyboard shortcuts). I hoped Adobe might solve this issue in the updates…. But no...

Thanks for sharing additional information, Louise. In these situations, we do recommend resetting the preferences as the shortcuts for other applications are working and to ensure that the Illustrator Preferences are not corrupt. Also could you please check if you are using an application by the name Webroot? If yes, please turn it off and then check again.
