Which graphics tablet?

Explorer ,
Dec 04, 2017 Dec 04, 2017

I am looking for a bit of advice. I use adobe Illustrator, some Photoshop, for most of my design/graphics work on PC. I have used a Wacom tablet over the years, my last one (almost ready for the bin) is a Intuos 3. I am looking for a new graphics tablet. I use pen and mouse. Which should I get. I use a small working space of approx 8 x 13cms. I was going to get the Intuos Pro but have read a few bad reviews. I only know Wacom, but am open to suggestion of other brands.

Cheers folks for any help.

Other brands than Wacom might or might not work with Illustrator. You might want to search this forum for threads about the model you are planning to buy when deciding for a Non-Wacom tablet. Some tablet can be made to work, some can't.

Hi Jojo,

Many of the illustrators/designers I know use either a Wacom Intuos or alternatively, a Huion tablet. If you're looking to invest in something bigger, you can't go wrong with a Cintiq.

Something you could also consider (my preference and personal workflow!) is to pick up an iPad Pro. There are apps out there that let you turn your iPad into a display (similar to a Cintiq) which makes working pretty seamless. Plus there are so many apps out now that you can work on the go, which is really nice. I find the screen size of the large iPad Pro to be a perfect format for using as a display tablet.

What is your price point? What kind of work do you do primarily? There are so many variables when it comes to this kind of hardware, and someone may love one tablet while another person would never use it. The market is also growing with myriad options, from tablet displays to mobile tablet computers. Before I got an iPad Pro, I primarily used an Intuos Pro Medium and never had issues with it in Illustrator.

Let me know if you need further recommendations.

Best,

Wren

Thanks for the advice on here folks. I bought the Wacom Intuos Pro in the end, as I did quite a bit of research and felt this suited my needs best.

Happy New year. 🙂

Don't worry about the Intros Pro review you read, I use one at work and and Intuos 4 at home and love them both. Some of the Asian tablets could save you some money, but in the future may not work so you be glad you went with the industry leader

I highly recommend XP-Pen tablets as well. I have the XP-Pen Artist15.6 , which was, at the time, the medium sized tablet in the Intuos line (I say 'at the time' because mine is over a year old now, and I'm not quite up to speed on their recent offerings). It has good pressure sensitivity, is easy to set up and use, comes with replacement pen nibs, and works well with various graphics programs (including Corel Painter, which is what I use). All I can say is that it's miles ahead of drawing with a mouse.
