Hopefully this is a simple problem but I justcan't work out. Adding page numbers to an existing project. I've produced a print on demand that I'm getting printed on demand through amazon. I just got my proof copy back and noticed that I'd forgotten to add page numbers. When I said forgot I really mean that I added them in ID but didn't add them to the actual manuscript. The manuscript is built as a book in ID of separate chapters with page numbering set to automatic. I assumed, wrongly that these number would carry over. Doh! (see attached)

Can someone explain what step I've left out, only really really simply as I'm a dunce. I've tried reading old posts and I'm guessing I need to create a footer but can't figure out how to do it. No matter what I try I can't create one.
(Note: final version needs to be exported as a pdf.)

>> with page numbering set to automatic
No there is not. As you see in your screenshot your numbering cross indd's is not automatic. Be careful, if you have non-symmetric left and right master-pages you will be have a reall mess after re-numbering if you not add empty pages for.
You can find it all about in help, but better to give this work for professional.

I would usually add page numbers in the master page. In your screenshot, the pages are using the A-Master, so if you go to the A-Master in the pages palette, you will be able to add the automatic page numbering there (make a text box and right click and go insert special character, markers, current page number).

This will add the page number to the current document, but not all in the book. But if you look closely at your original screenshot, see the icon to the left of the first ID document? It indicates the style source for all the other documents.

BE CAREFUL THOUGH! if your other documents have master pages that appear differently to the first document, you may NOT want to consider the following solution, and that is - in the book palette - go to synchronize options, uncheck all of the options except for master pages, and then go synchronize. This will apply the master page formatting to all other documents in the book without synchronizing other items.
If you're unsure about any of this, add the page number to each file's master page one at a time as described at the beginning of my post. There aren't many documents to do here.

Boy is this tricky. I think I've hurt my brain trying to work it out. Still no joy I'm afraid. I'm not sure I'm understanding this very well.
So far I've got a page number to appear at the end of the first page's text (See attached after the word 'God' - I apologise for redacting the text but this is pre-released copyright material). Unfortunately I can't get it to sit inside the text box. I also can't get the body text to 'shift up' to give the number room at the bottom of the page. The only way I could get it on the page at all was to shrink the primary text frame manually.
As I understand it if I get this all correct on the master page I can then instruct it to filter down through the rest of the chapter and then I would have to repeat the process for each chapter.

Disregard everything I just posted. Think I've got it. Me being thick as usual. I was only single clicking the master page, not double clicking. Once I'd properly selected the left master page I could apply global changes to the primary text frame and page numbering. I then repeated for right hand page and so far things seem to be happening as expected. Phew!
