Can I generate a TOC from a character style? (Locked: Duplicate Post)

No, it requries a paragraph style to determine the content of the table of contents. Character styles can be used in the section for More Options for formatting the appearance of the table of contents.

I didn't realize that you asked this question twice this morning, with slightly different wording. I'm going to add a link to your other post (and lock this one) so that others who are interested in this topic can see that string, which includes links to a 3rd party app and a script that may solve this for you, since it is not a supported TOC feature in InDesign.
