When I click on a style in the paragraph styles panel, select to edit that style, the add styles to group box pops up. I can't edit the style because of this. Anyone know what would cause this behavior?

Not sure what you're doing here - or if it's a glitch.
But I never double click a style to edit it.
Right click and use the contextual menu to Edit style.
If that's not working then
Try resetting your preferences:
Windows: Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
macOS: While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.

As i said above, WHAT I’M DOING is right-clicking, and i get that style group box, and that's ALL I GET... That's WHY I'm having to double-click to get into the edit panel. (this has never happened before, and I've been using ID for YEARS. I have 63 books, and have created most of them in it).
And I hope i don't have to annihilate my preferences each time there's an issue. That seems to be the go-to solution for everything. Hopefully it will resolve, and it's just a glitch. Thanks.

Hey you know I'm doing my best to help you.
Please refrain from using caps when replying, it's the internet equivalent of shouting, thank you.
I appreciate you might have been doing this - but this forum is searchable and others find the information from now to infinity years and might find it helpful.
If you don't find it helpful for your situation then that is completely fine. I appreciate the feedback so we can move forward and find a resolution for you.

Unfortunately, you will probably need to do this step. If you don't want to do it then that's ok, it's unlikely the glitch would resolve itself.
Maybe it might if you were to reboot the computer or something like that - but not likely, in my opinion.
Before resetting preferences you can back up your preferences before doing this step

Hi @Kelli Jae Baeli ,
what I first would try is to reset InDesign's Cache data first. Before you do this, backup the cache of course.
Maybe this will help without the need to reset the preferences as well.
Hm…
Could you do a screenshot of the options you have with the context menu?
What happens to you is that the option "New Group From Style…" is activated.
Instead of "Edit Style "Stylename"".
