Hello,
I received an InDesign file from a outside vendor and when I try to open it I get the following popup message:
Cannot open the file . Adobe InDesign may not
support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be
missing or the file may be open in another application.
Can anyone help me? I am using InDesign CC2019. They also sent me the following folders with the InDesign file: 'Document Fonts' & 'Links'
Thank you in advance for any detailed support you can provide. I'd call myself a beginner at InDesign with only about 6 brochure projects under my belt.
Christina
Is there an IDML file? Try opening that?
How was this sent to you?

It sure sounds like you have the latest version, and that should be able to open native INDD files going back to at least a decade.
My bet is they sent you the wrong type of file -- a PDF or (gods forbid) a JPEG or PNG -- but accidentally named with the .indd extension. Ask for a replacement file; one they tested in house before sending, preferably.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their helpful information. With all of your help, I was able to get the correct file type and get it opened.
Thanks again

Since you have ID CC 2019, I'm assuming the sender has a plug-installed that is adding code to the file requiring the plug-in be installed. This is not uncommon for some older plug-ins. Often, there is a free update to remove the requirement from the file. (Usually, saving as IDML provides a work-around, but that does not address the actual problem.)

Hi
I am getting this issue now with some files using InDesign 15.1.1. Is there a fix for this?
