Cannot place this file. No filter found for this operation

I've tried to import the .xlsx file to Indesign but it says "Cannot place this file. No filter found for this operation". This problem came when I saved this file with WPS Office, but with Microsoft Excel it's fine.

Do any suggestions for a WPS office user so I can use it with Adobe Indesign?

You have to use a compatible file type. Maybe that WPS can export in some text based file type, csv or tab separated text.

It sounds like some identifier info is missing from the header data of your exported file, and that's probably a problem with the WPS Office software.

What other options for saving besides .xlsx do you have? InDesign can import a large variety of tabular text formats.

InDesign is certainly able to import both .xls and .xlsx, along with .txt files (tabbed text), so if your files are failing it is either a problem with the files themselves, or your installation if InDesign is damaged.

I would try a number of troubleshooting steps, starting with resetting the prefs: See Reset InDesign Preferences and Other Troubleshooting

Are you  using the Creative Cloud Desktop App to do the installation?

I would use the cleaner tool (Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool to solve installation problems ) to remove everything, then reinistall the desktop app and use it to reinstall InDesign. Best not to import preferences from the previous version.

Yes, I used the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App and I deleted everything including InDesign preferences, but I didn't use the cleaner tool. I'll try it, hope it works!

You have to save the file with Excel.

Are you saying that WPS Office doesn't save a compatible .xlx or .xlsx file and only excel can be used?

Fake Excel files have been an issue forever. They're simply not 100% compatible.

The fix is to open them in Excel and resave them so no, you don't have to use Excel to create them but you do have to use Excel to save them. That said, I'm sure a very simple XLS/XLXS file might work and it certainly doesn't hurt to try, but for better or worse, these 3rd party apps don't work well enough to depend on them exclusively.

This includes Google Sheets and Numbers.
