Column break character and TOC

Hello,

A two-column TOC is not picking up the Column Break character (Num Enter) from a chapter. The TOC just starts a new line where the Column Break character should be, instead of moving to the next column. Why is that? Is there a workaround (except manual fiddling in the TOC)? Thanks.

This is for CS4.
