Hi - I am a basic user of InDesign (in the UK - PC user).  I need to create a line pointing at a specific part of an image and with a circle on the outer end in which to put a number - 1, 2,3 and so on. Please can anyone help me with step by step instructions? Thank you in advance

I use this type of label often in instructions on screenshots to guide users for use of software or online apps.

I use the steps mentionned but I usually

  • draw a text frame on top of the circle as often, the number has to be quite small. The circle will not allow the text/number to be close to the edge of the circle. Ctrl+B to center text vertically > middle and ignore Text-Wrap so it is not affected by other parts of the design on the page.
  • I group it all, so when I move the group with the Alt key down on the keyboard, I make easy duplicates
  • I use a paragraph style to change the font/size/colour... properties of all of the labels at ones
  • I use a Object Style to control a drop-down shadow or common elements of the group or just the circle
  • I also drop the group in my library so I can recycle my design as oftewn as I need
