Is it possible to create this look with the Rule Below feature? I know if I put a stroke of white on the text it will do it, but if I then put the copy over a background, I have an unwanted white stroke. Any ideas?

Why not use the background color for the text stroke?

The background is an image or texture.

Convert your type and stroke to outlines. Create a new Path > Offset Path on the type the distance you want (e.g. 3pt).
then select the new path and the rule path (make sure the rule path is behind) and Minus Front. There ya go.

I can figure how to do it many ways. What I'm asking (unanswered so far) is if it's possible to do with para rules. Outlining type is the bottom choice for so many reasons. There ya go. 😉

Then, No. 😉

Serioulsy though, there is no way to do what you want to do with live text. Doing this at a vector object level is the best you're gonna get.

I'll have to do a Feature Request: transparent stroke. That'd do it. Knocks out of the rule beneath.

Hi Dave,
don't think so, that this feature will do it, because your sample image is showing a rounded stroke.
I wonder if a font designer could provide a font with an open type feature that could do it right.

The only way I know to do this with live type is to set it up in Illustrator and place the result into InDesign. Extra steps to place the art, but it will keep your text live, so changing the words will be quck and easy
Live text - separate stroke under, with stroke set to 0% opacity.
Group text with rule and set knockout group on the group.
