delete a cell in a table with 4 columns x 5 rows

I would like to delete a cell in a table with 4 columns x 5 rows. I can only delete the contents of the cell, but not the cell which remains there as a hole in the table. Delete the cell so that the other neighbouring cells scale to cover the hole of the deleted cell. In the same way I would like to be able to add a cell where I need it.

Is this possible?

  1. Duplicate the text frame with the table. You will need to do this because you are about to delete the contents of the second row.
  2. Select all the cells in the second row and Merge Cells. This will make the second row one cell. With that cell highlighted, set the margins for all sides of the cell to 0.
  3. Press Escape so you are editing the contents of the cell. Insert a table with one row and three columns.
  4. Paste the contents of the three cells in the copied table to the cells in the new sub-table.

You will probably neeed to finesse or fine tune the formatting for the subtable to make things look smooth.

Another option is to recreate the table using twelve columns. Merge cells for each row depending on whether you want four columns or three columns.
