DeviceN and Nchannel colors introduced in InDesign output PDF

Contributor ,

Hi,

I am facing some colour introduce error in PDF which is created from InDesign software.

In the .EPS figure the color mode is in Grey but if we load it in InDesign file and then create PDF the "DeviceN and Nchannel" colors are introduced. Please refer below screenshot and advise how to get the exact Grey which is present in the .EPS in the InDesign outputt PDF.

Hi Santhosh,

1. what version of InDesign are you using?

2. What settings were used to generate the PDF?

3. The PDF will be used for printing?

Best

Stephan

.eps is an evil, rusty file format.

Did you try to convert all .eps to .ai?

Hi @santhoshr29800103 ,

what's the exact issue with "DeviceN and Nchannel" in your workflow?

Hi @santhoshr29800103 ,

my question was more about the why behind the error message.

Why do you think there is a problem with DeviceN and Nchannel ?

Why do you consider this report to be an error? Who has defined these preflight rules?

I am asking because we often hear from people who just use some preflight profile and assume anything it says must be a problem, rather than setting up tests appropriate to their own workflow issues.

Hi @santhoshr29800103 , In your first post Enfocus is flagging the Nchannel color as a spot color. Is the image separating on a spot plate, or the process Black plate? Seems like your client .joboptions is Exporting to a CMYK destination from InDesign, which moves the Grayscale image the CMYK Black plate unchanged when the Destination is Document CMYK.

How you set your Export Output tab will affect what happens to the grayscale. Here I’ve placed a Photoshop EPS grayscale and exported using the PDF/X-4 preset (No Color Conversion) vs. PDF/X-1a, which forces a conversion to Document CMYK where the grayscale outputs to the CMYK Black plate:

AcrobatPro shows both exporting to the Black plate (not as a Spot color):

Hi,

Still the issue not clear in our end. We are using client supplied joboption in that the working space is Coated Fogra39. While creating PDF in this setting, we faced this issue. Unable to solve till now. I don't know why unnecessary "DeviceN and Nchannel" introduced.

Regards,

Santhosh

Hi @santhoshr29800103 , can you show the .joboptions Output Panel?

DeviceN would be expected when a placed grayscale object is converted to Document CMYK on export—the grayscale object is not converted to new CMYK values, but is put on the Black plate.

If the chosen Output Destination profile conflicts with the document’s assigned CMYK profile, the grayscale object will convert to CMYK and inspect as either DeviceCMYK or profiled CMYK depending on the Standard and Profile Inclusion Policy.

If you expect the grayscale object to inspect unchanged (DeviceGray), you will need to set the Output Color Conversion to No Color Conversion. AcrobatPro does not Show any of the above as a Spot color.
