display image thumbnails in a spread

Advisor ,
Feb 03, 2023 Feb 03, 2023

Does InDesign have a feature where you can display your images as thumbnails to see many of them at once?  Sort of like what you can do in Lightroom (screen shot below)?  I looked through the View tab but didn;t see anything like that.  Thanks.

These are the thumbnail pages, so, if you have only 2 images on a spread, you won't get anything else. What do you want to get, exactly?

If you need a catalog of all the placed images, you can use the ImageCatalog.jsx script which is shipped with InDesign

In the Pages Panel, you can select from the side menu Panel Options > Pages Size and select Jumbo from the drop-down menu.

I can't find Panel Options.  Can you point me to the right place?  Thanks.

Got it, thanks.  The thumbnails are pretty small, and they appear only 2 to a row.  Are there options for making this presentation different?

Thanks.  Since I'm tryhing to pair images in spreads based on color/style, seeing as many at once is the goal - like what Lightroom shows in its grid.  But I realize that may not be an option here.

Just to clarify, are the images you want to see already placed in your document, or do you want to see a folder of images in a grid so that you can select and Place?

If it’s the latter you can drag and drop from Bridge:

Kind of workaround - 2nd monitor 😉

Thanks.  I found a video on youtube that explains how to do this.  But when I got to the step where you double click on ImageCatalog in the Scripts dialog, the dialog that comes up doesn't give you the option to navigate to the folder where my images are (screen shot below).  I guess I could place the images all on the desktop but I'm just wondering why I'm not getting this option.  Thanks.  If it works this looks like a good solution.

as @rob day wrote, you should be able to navigate to any folder. Did you try to click here? You should get a dropdown menu, allowing you to select any folder.

Thanks, but no, I don't get a dropodown menu when clicking there.  But it's okay.  I copied the images to my Desktop temporarily, and was able to generate the Catalog.  And it's just what I need.

If you remove from the desktop after making the catalog, their links will be broken.

I figured as much.  Since I am doing this to reference images I am placing in a zine for design purposes, once I'm done with that, I won't need the catalog.  But I do wish I knew why I don't get an option to navigate to folders.  Desktop is the default, and I am unable to access a drop down to navigate elsewhere.

The sample script is fairly old, you could try this which is similar:

Since I am doing this to reference images I am placing

Also, did you try the Bridge drag and drop solution I posted above

I'm not sure how the dragging and dropping from Bridge works.  One image at a time?  I tried dragging all of them at once but that didn't work.  One at a time isn't really practical for my purposes.  I want all of them in thumbnails at more or less the same size on a few pages.  That's easily (autimatically) accomplished using the script.

Once you’ve made the catalog how are you going to move a selected image into your magazine layout? Drag and drop, cut and paste? If you do that the magazine link will be the same as the catalog link, so you can’t delete the catalog’s desktop links without breaking the magazine links.

Thanks.  The zine is already created.  It didn't occur to me until after the fact to tweak my layout, so I'm using the cartalog as an overview of the images on a few pages.  I'll move images inside the zine around and their links won't be broken as those images are in a folder which is fixed.

You should be able to get at any folder—you have Desktop selected from the Folder: dropdown. On OSX I can see all my drives and navigate to any folder:

What about exporting the InDesign document as PDF spreads and setting the View to say 25%?
