Figure Caption

Having been away from inDesign for a while, I hav forgotten how to add a caption to a new figure in my .indd document, and have the figure number slide into my existing collection of figures. If one of you could point me on instructions for doing that, I would be grateful.

I had the same problem crop up after figure numbering was working. I had set up the caption paragraph style, calling it Figure Caption, and the figures were numbered in sequence, starting over with each chapter. Like, for Chapter 3, Figure 3-1. <Caption> and next would be Figure 3-2 <Caption>. Then one day it stopped working. Every figure in the chapter was numbered 3-1.

Solution: I edited Figure Caption paragraph style, bullets and numbering dialog, and changed "Restart Numbers at This Level After" from 1 to Any Previous Level.

The restart numbers after 1 worked before, but then stopped working. I have no idea why. But changing it to Any Previous Level got it working again.
