Find and replace object types

I know I can find/replace object types by entering all the details and making the changes within the F/R window.  Is it not possible to put in an object type name [Drop frame, v1] and replace with [Drop frame, v2] , for example?

I have inherited a number of documents that need the object attributes changed for specific sections (changing the attributes within the object is not possible) .

I feel sure that there is a way (I have rose-tinted glasses) but can't find it.

This is what object styles are for. Other than that, I suppose there might be a way to script it but without more specifics, I'm not sure how to help.
