Fit text frame to content exactly

Explorer ,

How do I get text frames to fit the contents exactly, when the text runs onto two or more lines?  Object > Fitting > Fit frame to content (or CTRL+ALT+C) only works for single lines of text. When I try it with several lines, it leaves a gap either side and seems to keep the boxes to a fixed width.

It's a real pain when trying to distribute the text boxes evenly.

Attached screenshot shows the problem.

Text frames are done with the AutoFit in the Text Frame Options.

Thanks - I think that's what I need. Anyone know if there are shortcuts for the sizing options? It's a bit of a pain to have to go into that menu for each frame.
