I've been exporting EPUBs with the footnote placement inside a popup. But if that feature's not available on most devices, then it's worse than useless. Especially as it defaults to sticking them, unnumbered, at the end of a section. And some devices (e.g., Kindle for Android) you can't even jump back to your place in the text. It seems as if end-of-paragraph notes would be most user-friendly, but ugh...how unsightly! Every option is bad. So...which of the bad options do you use, and have you found any way to mitigate the badness? I hate, hate, hate that there's no way to provide users with aesthetically pleasing and easily navigable notes! 266 million ebooks were sold last year in the U.S., so you'd think that somebody would come up with better solutions.

P.S. Obviously most of the issues are on the device/reading app end, but surely InDesign could at least fix the problem of unnumbered notes. Surely it would be a not terribly difficult programming fix to add the number!

If it were that easy, I'm pretty sure someone would have come up with something by now.
