Gradient feather settings change when exporting to PDF

I have an inDesign file with an image with graduated feather on each page. This is set to allow text over the less opaque half of the image. When I convert the file to PDF the graduation settings change and even though there is some gradient it has a hard edge. The iD file is fine, just the PDF is wrong. Any ideas?

I've moved this from the Using the Community forum (which is the forum for issues using the forums) to the InDesign forum so that proper help can be offered.

Does it happen if you export to the default PDF/X-4 preset? Can you show screen captures?

Interesting suggestion Rob.

I wasn't using those pre-sets just following file > export. the X$ presets give a better outcome and I think I can improve still further by editing the gradient on the original iD file.

Thanks for your help. If you can add any other tips I'd be even more greateful.

Phil
