I know only the workaround: Draw a rectangle with text wrap, but not visible.
But it is a real limitiation, can you submit a feature request?

That's... interesting. I rarely shape text boxes so I've never seen it, and I wondered if it was real or some phantom effect you were seeing. I think this might be a bit of "papa knows best" programming choice, since a sharp corner might produce weird effects.
It does take a fairly narrow range of text format choices to be noticeable.
Definitely worth fixing or at least making an option.

Hi Bassquake,
I'd suggest a solution where the polygon shape of the text frame is drawn according to the inner area for the text that is visible in your screenshot. The text frame has no insets at all.
To make that work, we additionally need a custom striped stroke around that area.
That stroke is aligned away from the path of the polygon. The text frame's fill color and the stroke's empty part is filled with the same color. In my sample below with a yellow:
Download and check the details from my sample InDesign document you can download from my Dropbox:

Hi @Bassquake:
That is how it works. You can file a feature request here:
https://indesign.uservoice.com
But does it really have a negative impact on the layout? Worst case, is you adjust the line segments with the Direct Selection tool to get the word wrap you need.

I think the rounding is deliberate, to deliver 'expected results' in most usage. But if you use smaller, tighter text, the rounding will show. Not really sure what to think about this; using a text frame with no offset spacing would work exactly as the OP wishes, but for a visible frame around it, you'd have to use Uwe's technique or a manually-drawn background shape.
Oh, well, both ways work, just not easily+perfectly.

Have put in a feature request to have control over the rounding as recommended by others on here. Hope they add it! Having text run into the curve is annoying! Thanks all.
