How to automatically have ... switch to ellipsis.

I'm stunned that I can't find this one.

How do I get indesign to automatically correct ... to … (dot, dot, dot to ellipsis)? Even MacOS Mail can do this.

Can't find anything in preferences and if I try and do it with the autocorrect part of preferences I get a "Entry contains invalid character" error.

Seems totally basic, am I missing something obvious?

You could add an autocorrect entry...

Yes, but then you'd have to enable autocorrect. (Half-joking, but I barely tolerate the function in Word and really don't want to battle an inferior version in ID.)

How about a macro key that inserts an ellipsis character instead of typing three dots?

Thought I'd try the system keyboard text replacements, but seems inDesign ignores/overides those. Where else could I set a macro?

I was unable to enter in the three individual dots as an option. I think the entry could not start with a period.

Yeah, that's that "Entry contains invalid character". Dosn't like the period.

I'd just type the correct character, but after years of having it automatically created elsewhere I don't automatically think to do it. And I'd rather have an incorrect ellipses than to have inconsistancy in my document.

I'm glad to see it's not just me having an odd setting.

I had no luck with Kieth's method but perhaps someone else will.

Anyone else notice the other thread going about how to PREVENT three dots from being converted when pasting?
