How to Open Generative Expand Images from InDesign in Photoshop Without Using 'Package'

The 'Edit Original' icon in the 'Links' window isn't available for said generative-expanded image. Is it possible to consolidate the AI edits and get the image to appear in my computer's drive, and open it in Photoshop, without hitting 'Package'? Thanks for your help.

I understand how important it is to have smooth access to your generative-expanded images! At the moment, directly editing the generative-expanded images in Photoshop through 'Edit Original' in the 'Links' panel isn’t available because these assets are cloud-based. To open the image in Photoshop, you'll need to first save the expanded image locally as shown below: 

1. Right-click on the image in the InDesign layout.  
2. Select 'Export' and save it as a JPEG, PNG, or another format on your computer.  
3. Once saved, you can open the image in Photoshop for further edits.

Hi @Abhishek Rao, thanks for your answer. When I right-click on the image, either while having selected it with the Selection Tool (V) or the Direct Selection Tool (A), the context menu popping up doesn't show an 'Export' option.

Thank you for your response! I appreciate your patience. It looks like the 'Export' option might not be available directly from the right-click menu for generative-expanded images. Instead, please try the following: 

  1. With the image selected, go to the File menu at the top.
  2. Choose Export from the dropdown.
  3. In the Export dialog, select the desired file format (e.g., JPEG, PNG) and choose a location on your computer to save the file.
  4. Once saved, you can open the exported image in Photoshop for further editing.

I’m really sorry for the confusion regarding the export option for generative-expanded images.

 

I’ve reproduced the issue on my end, and I can confirm that the 'Edit Original' button is indeed greyed out by default for these images since they are saved to a temporary folder. To edit these images, you’ll need to save them to your machine's drive first by going to "File > Export". After that, you can open and edit them in other applications as needed.

@Abhishek Rao Please stop apologizing while at the same time lying to your clients. You don't reproduce your own instructions before pasting them here, and on top of that, it is quite obvious you aren't knowledgeable in Adobe InDesign; otherwise, you'd know that if you click on "File > Export," you export the entire page and not just a specific image on that page. Please stop giving misleading advice and direct this thread to a knowledgeable Adobe employee specializing in InDesign.
