How to Split a Large Text Box into Multiple Smaller Text Boxes in InDesign

I have a large text box that takes up a full page (8.5x11in.) and I'd like to break up the body copy in the large text box into smaller text boxes. Is there a simple way to do this without creating a bunch of smaller text boxes with the Type Tool and cutting and pasting sections from the large text box into those smaller text boxes?

If you want the text separate in each box, no. If you want or don't mind it being continuous, or threaded, between the boxes...

Size the text frame down to the size you want for the first content. There will be a red + sign at the bottom right. Click it, and use that cursor to drag the size and position of the second box. Click the red plus on that one, click and drag the size and position of the third box. And so on. If you still have a red plus after drawing your last box, you will have to make the text smaller or the boxes bigger to hold it all.

The "red plus" indicates what's called "overset text" — text in the flow for which there is no room in the current frame.

Why do you want to do so?

After u have made multiple linked text boxes (same or different sizes). If u just select one of them and "alt-drag" clone it, that particular text box will break free from the link. yet retaining the text in its frame. But if u try to clone a few of the linked boxes, they will remain linked. Abit tedious, but it gets your text in that box. 🙂
