Image Resizing Turns Image Box Grey!

Help!! After updating to the latest version of InDesign all my image boxes turn to grey when I resize the image, thus making it difficult to see what the image will look while I am resizing. I have tried display performance, adjusting my interface settings (I always like Immediate), and I have spent hours trying to find an answer on a message board but I am still stuck.

The below image is an example of what happens.. I am trying to adjust the bottom right image, and as you can see the portion outside the image frame shows as usual (called out with pink dashed line), but the image inside the frame (called out with yellow dashed line) turns grey! I know this program forwards and backwards and I'm losing my mind over this seemingly simple problem. Does anyone have a tip for how to get the image inside the frame to be visible while resizing, like it is on the outside of the frame????

You could try checking and switching off "Content Aware Fit" in InDesign preferences and then resize.

I've been having this same issue for months. This not only happens when resizing an image but also when cropping. I'm trying to find Content Aware Fit in preferences to see if that resolves it, but I don't see it anywhere. I'm using Indesign 2018 (13.1)—but wasn't Content Aware Fit a feature added in 2019? Could this be an issue of switching from 2019 back to 2018—which happened at work because some of our Macs couldn't be updated to 2019. This has been a constant source of frustration, but I can't remember how long. It might have started long before the upgrade.

Any help appreciated.

An idea worth investigating, you say that you migrated from 2019 to 2018. Does this mean that the documents you are trying to open up having this issue are indeed IDML files exported out from CC2019? If this is the case then try to export these IDML's from CC2019 by first switching off the Content Aware Fit setting.
