...and there is no way to fix it.
Lately, whenever I bring text into an InDesign document, no matter how I do it, most of the text oversets for no apparent reason and it cannot be fixed. For instance, I can create an empty text box, copy some plain text from TextEdit, and paste it in, only to see the first few lines of text, in a text box that is large enough for all the text. Looking at it in Story Editor, all the text is right there but there but most of it shows the lefthand red line next to it, indicating it's overset. If I put my cursor at the beginning of the overset text in Story Editor and delete the carriage return, it just takes the line I've run into and makes it overset as well. There are no unusual characters or anything in the text--we're talking raw, unstyled text. There are no extra-long words causing it to overset, nothing. No matter how I bring the text in--dragging a text file onto the page or into a text box, pasting text right onto the page, or pasting text into an empty text box, it does this crazy oversetting. What is causing this? Makes NO sense and I have been having to create numerous text boxes as a workaround.

It would be useful if you could tell us what operating system (version) and which version of InDesign you are using. A couple of screenshot would be a great plus. Did you recently upgrade ?
If you open the info panel, does it announce how many words are overset?

Have you checked Object>text options? Or right click in text box and select text options.

Is there a "no break" applied in the default [Basic Paragraph]?
