InDesign 2024 Font Issue: Baskerville Text Appearing Bold After Relaunch

Running InDesign 2024. Doing final edits to a novel. Drop down menus were not loading properly (would appear for a split second, then disappear as you scrolled down.) I quit InDesign after saving every file the prompt asked me to save. Re-launched InDesign. Selected the file from 'recent files' list. When it opened, menus seemed to work properly, but all of the text that had previously been 'Baskerville regular (11 pt.)' now showed up in some type of bold - although if I then highlighted text and selected 'bold', it made the text even more bold. Any suggestions on how to get back to the file's original text format? (I do have a saved version from before the last 100 pages of edits, but I really don't want to have to go back and do all of that over again.) Thank you.

How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?

Have you tried resetting the InDesign preferences back to the factory defaults?

Are you using a font utility or are your fonts loaded directly on your computer (you didn't say if you're on a Mac or PC)? If you are using a font utility check to make sure that it is not giving you any warnings about font conflicts.

Did you add any kind of transparency to the document? That can cause text to display more boldly.

You might also want to try exporting the file to .isml, than open that and save as with a new name to avoid overwtiing the existing file. RThat will clear minor corruption.

Peter meant saving it as an IDML document, which is a good idea as it clears out the crud that builds up over time and that can cause a file corruption.

First takeaway: save backups as often as you do NOT want to repeat the accumulated work. 🙂

The export to IDML and open/save as INDD suggestion is always a good start for these mysterious glitch situations. If that doesn't clean up the font issue, bring more details (especially what platform you're on  —some of the issues vary between Mac/Win). There's probably a fairly simple cleanup process, it just has to be the right one.

Would it be possible that you have inadvertently applied a stroke to the text?
