InDesign 2025 crashing and deleting content on pages.

New Here ,
Nov 15, 2024 Nov 15, 2024

Since updating, crashing when moving text boxes, or scrolling quickly.

When rebooting, I'm told files are damaged and then repaired. Upon opening the repaired file, pages are missing all content in text box on last-viewed page.

Hi @susanne_5594,

Thank you for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with InDesign 2025 crashing and deleting content.

To help troubleshoot, could you please confirm if the crashing is happening with a specific file or across all your InDesign files? Additionally, were you able to submit the crash report? Here's a helpful link to guide you through the process: Submit Crash Reports.

In the meantime, please refer to the following articles that may assist with resolving the issue:

  1. InDesign Crashes When Editing Text Frame
  2. InDesign Crashes Upon Launch
  3. InDesign 2025 v20.0 Crashes on Redo
  4. InDesign 2025 Crash Error

Once we have more details, we can investigate further.

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

Best,
Abhishek Rao

I just had something similar happen to a file I was working on over the weekend. Saturday night I had just finished working on 100+ pg document, had been working in it without issue for the past few weeks. I saved out a PDF, everything was fine at that point, I just needed to relink some images, but put that off to the morning. Next morning, I get back into it, relink the images, then go to output another PDF, that's when I start seeing content deleted, seemingly at random Not just on one page, but throughout the document. Sometimes it'd be the whole text box, sometimes it'd just be the text inside the text box, sometimes it'd be vector shapes. Just completely screwed me over and wasted weeks of effort. I have backups to work off of and the one PDF I output the night before, but this is completely ridiculous.

Hi @Graeme5E99,

Sorry to hear about the issues you’ve encountered with your file. To better understand and resolve this, would you mind providing some additional details:

1. Was the file created entirely in the current version of InDesign, or was it migrated from an older version?

2. Was this a cloud document or saved locally?

3. Was the file saved on a local disk, or a shared/network/cloud location? Have you noticed any inconsistencies with other files saved in the same location?

4. What version of InDesign and operating system are you using?

5. Can you confirm if the document contains linked assets (e.g., images) stored on external drives, cloud services, or network locations?

6. Were there any third-party plugins or scripts involved in the project?

7. Did you encounter any issues or unusual behavior (e.g., slow performance, warnings) during the session when the file was last saved?

8. Can you specify if the missing content includes particular types of elements (e.g., linked images, embedded graphics, specific fonts, or native shapes)?

9. Do you observe any patterns in what was deleted?

10. Was there a power outage, system update, or unexpected shutdown that might have impacted the file?

Once we have these details, we’ll be better equipped to investigate and assist you further.

Looking forward to your response!

Best,
Abhishek

1. Was the file created entirely in the current version of InDesign, or was it migrated from an older version?

It was a file that had been migrated from a previous version, I believe 2023 was the last time it had been worked on.

2. Was this a cloud document or saved locally?

Saved locally

3. Was the file saved on a local disk, or a shared/network/cloud location? Have you noticed any inconsistencies with other files saved in the same location?

Saved locally to an external harddrive

4. What version of InDesign and operating system are you using?

InDesign 2025 on a Windows 11 PC

5. Can you confirm if the document contains linked assets (e.g., images) stored on external drives, cloud services, or network locations?

Document does contain linked images on an external harddrive. I had actually just gone through and relinked some images that had broken links.

6. Were there any third-party plugins or scripts involved in the project?

No third-party scripts or plug-ins are used.

7. Did you encounter any issues or unusual behavior (e.g., slow performance, warnings) during the session when the file was last saved?

I hadn't noticed anything unusual with it beforehand, that's usually a trigger for me to save out an extra copy of the document if I notice anything, but beforehand it had been operating relatively well, though, as the OP noted, InDesign 2025 does seem to crash at random (just a general observation).

8. Can you specify if the missing content includes particular types of elements (e.g., linked images, embedded graphics, specific fonts, or native shapes)?

Text boxes, text inside text boxes, and vector shapes (native), line shapes. It won't be universal for some of them. I have one page with half the line shapes missing from the top half of the page, while have are fine.

9. Do you observe any patterns in what was deleted?

10. Was there a power outage, system update, or unexpected shutdown that might have impacted the file?

Once we have these details, we’ll be better equipped to investigate and assist you further.

No power outage, system updates, or anything else out of the ordinairy.

Going through the file now, I am seeing some weird page sizing. Elements that were on the page were apparently moved a few feet down, creating oversized artboards where those elements were moved to. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to how the elements were moved, they were strewn all about vertically on the artboard. On one page, elements were apparently all left-aligned and moved up and over to the upper left, on another they were all shifted down by a few feet, on another, an element that had been off the page in the artboard area was just moved onto the page. Apparently all at random, not on every page, which will make fixing the issue a nightmare.

Hello @Graeme5E99,

Thanks for the details!

The crashes and file corruption seem to be related to a combination of factors, such as migrated files, external storage, and linked assets. Some steps you can try to mitigate and potentially resolve are below:

• Ensure InDesign 2025 is updated to the latest version, as updates often include bug fixes.
• Before reopening a damaged file, try duplicating it and working on the copy.
• Open the recovered file, go to File > Save As, and save it with a new name. This may remove hidden corruption.
• Create a new document in InDesign 2025, then use File > Place to insert pages from the damaged document. You can also save the IDML file and create a new InDesign file using that. This often helps with files migrated from older versions.
• Relink all external files (e.g., images) and ensure they are stored on a local internal drive during editing. Avoid using external or network drives for active projects.

For Page Size Issues:
• If elements are shifting, check File > Document Setup to ensure consistent page sizes.
• Look for overset text or unusual frame sizes and use the Preflight Panel (Window > Output > Preflight) to catch potential issues.

Additionally, submit crash reports via the Adobe Crash Reporter tool when InDesign crashes. Include your email so the team can track and investigate further. Reference: https://adobe.ly/40taEom

If these steps don’t resolve the issue or if you continue to experience random crashes and missing content, please let us know, and we’ll escalate this to our engineering team for further investigation. Your detailed feedback is invaluable, and we’re here to ensure you can work without disruptions.

Best,

Abhishek

Hi Abhishek,

I’m too struggling with this issue since a week or two.
makin even the simplest tasks a hell of a job

Followed all the tipps you mentioned above, did the whole crash report thing. (Which is actually another topic I want to adres: never but really never, since this feature got implemented, the tool finds a solution. This is beyond frustrating, gazing at the the progres wheel knowing nothing will come up. Maybe time to change / erase this feature entirely?

below my very simple file even without any linked assets whatsoever, vectors and text only.

best,

Till

Hi @knowledgeable_Canvas0D45,

I couldn’t find any crash logs under your community email. Could you submit the report again with your email and DM it to me(via Community)? Ref: https://adobe.ly/42d51vm.

I tested your file, and it works fine for me. Are your files stored locally or on an external/network drive? Also, could you try saving it as IDML (File > Save As > InDesign Markup), then reopen it and check if the issue persists? Let me know your InDesign version and OS details!
