InDesign 2025 frequently crashes

New Here ,
Mar 03, 2025 Mar 03, 2025

We are using InDesign 2025. When we are creating pages for our publication, InDesign will frequently shut down. Once it happens if we don't restart the computer the crashes will become more frequent. We are working on a smb local server that stores our files, we connect to it to work on files and save out work. We have 4 in office computers connected and one off-site computer connected via VPN. Please let me know if a fix has been issued. This has been happening for the last 3 versions of InDesign, every update has done nothing to resolve this issue. Getting very frustrating.

Hi @Geri1,

Could you share more details, like the OS of your client machines, the exact InDesign version (20.1, 20.0, or 20.0.1), and the OS and SMB version of the remote server? Are all files affected or just specific ones?

Also, try moving a file locally and see if the issue persists. If InDesign crashes, do you get the Crash Reporter? If so, please submit it and share the email used (via DM on the Community), so I can check the logs: Submit Crash Reports.

Let me know the update.

macOS Sequoia 15.1, Indesign 20.1, not sure what you mean by SMB version. Files are affected randomly, we never know when it will happen, I'm not sure if they are getting the crash report window every time. The email associated with them would be ___.

Hey @Geri1,

Thanks for sharing the details! Since files are randomly affected and crashes become more frequent without a restart, it could be a memory-related issue or something tied to how InDesign interacts with the SMB server. Updating to macOS 15.3, as Leo suggested, is worth a try to see if it makes any difference.

Bill also made a great point - if your server hasn't been updated alongside CC 2025, there could be compatibility issues. It’s worth checking with your network admin to see if the SMB version and server settings are optimized for InDesign 2025.

If possible, try working on a file locally for a while and see if the crashes still happen. That will help determine if the issue is specific to the network connection. Also, if you do get the Crash Reporter, please submit the report so we can check the logs.

Let me know how things go after testing!

When you updated to CC 2025 did you also update your server for compatibility? Often servers are not immediately updated to match major software updates due to virus protection issues. Check with your network administrator as to what has been or will be done in terms of updating your servers.
