InDesign CC 20.0: Lag When Switching to/from Text Tool on Windows 11

I recently updated to Indesign CC 20.0 from 19.0. I used to have this issue with CS2 but I can't remember how I fixed it. When switching to and from the text tool Indesign lags for 5-6 seconds each time. Double clicking on a text box gets the same result, as well as using ESC to exit the text box and return to the pointer tool. I'm using Windows 11. There are 13 fonts in this 26 page document, lots of links but I was not having this issue until just the other day when I updated. I have reset my preferences and that did not help.

Hello @Monica27082178av0e,

Thanks for confirming. Would you mind trying to copy all layers/objects from this document to a new one to check if it helps?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi @Monica27082178av0e,

Thanks for your insights on the lag issues with InDesign CC 20.0. Could you please update to the latest version of InDesign, which is 2025 (20.0), and check if the issue persists?

Additionally, could you share details about your operating system? It would also be helpful if you could provide a screen recording demonstrating the lag, including the specific actions that trigger it.

Looking forward to your response!

Best,

Abhishek Rao

Hi @Monica27082178av0e:

Since you are already on 20.0, can you tell us how you reset your preferences? There are multiple ways to do this, each option goes a bit further than the previous. If you just used the Preferences button or the keystroke-on-launch option, continue through this post.

Hi @Monica27082178av0e,

Thanks for the update! Since you've recently updated to InDesign 20.0 and are on Windows 11 Pro (Version 23H2), I recommend trying the troubleshooting steps outlined in these links:

  1. Resolve Slow Performance and Unexpected Behavior in InDesign
  2. Slow Performance in InDesign

These resources may help identify and resolve the lag issues you're experiencing. Please let me know if you find any improvements or if you continue to encounter problems!

I used the "reset preferences on quit" in the General section of the preferences but I will try it again.

I reset them again and opened the document, it still does it.

Since I have only been using this document for a bit I didn't notice but the issue does not happen with other documents.

I seem to remember that being what I did back with CS5 (not 2 like I wrote originally) now that you told me to try that. I did and am not having the issue anymore. Only thing is I don't know what the issue was so I can try to prevent it happening again in the future.

Turn off that new Context bar, the little floating bar, it is causing delays on switching to text.

YES, experiencing this problem as well and it is SOOOO frustrating.
Running on 2019 MBP, Sequoia 15.1, InDesign 20.0
Sorry but copying and pasting to a new document a fairly large multi-page, multi-layer document with numerous linked boxes is not really a solution.

And what happens if you do a save-as and merging all your layers into one?
