InDesign CC 2017 crashes when running the "Package..." command

Since updating to CC 2017, every time I run the "Package..." command, InDesign crashes. The packaged file is saved and links are updated to the new location, so the functionality seems to be there, but the application crashes on completion of the task. This happens even with all options unchecked, so it doesn't appear to be an issue with fonts, copying links, relinking or creating a PDF, etc. This also occurs whether packaging to or from a network directory or a local drive.

Yes, as of the 18.2.2 release of Suitcase Fusion, I have not experienced the random crashes. For me, this seems to have fixed the problem.

Hi Monica,

I just downloaded the 2017.1 release to InDesign and have updated my system to 10.12.4.

Before I updated Suitcase to 18.2.2, I could package a file and InDesign wouldn't crash until I tried to close the original file. This was already a slight improvement so I read through the responses and updated Suitcase to 18.2.2.

Now InDesign works just fine, I can package a multipage document from a server with 20 plus images and vector graphics linked throughout the server using different share-points.

There's no more crash. This is impressive.

I don't usually package to a server volume and so I'm not testing that. I just package to my Documents folder on my main drive and transfer them to the server as part of my workflow.

Thank you for taking care of this.

Still no update on this? InDesign 2017 has crashed on me 3x this morning when trying to package different files. Grrr. I do have Extensis Suitcase Fusion installed, since @painless has mentioned it being a possible source of the issue.

I had the same problem with packing. I solved this by open Suitcase - Preferences - Activation - Plug in manager - Turn of Adobe Indesign CC 2017. After I did that, I have had no problem with pachage files

This is happening for our office as well. Monica, I just sent you our crash report.

InDesign crashes with "Package" command -- every time, with every file, with text or without text in the files (so it’s not a font issue).

The ONLY time it does not crash, is if the file is saved on a personal desktop, but since we work in the real world, we cannot save every file we work on individually on our desktops—we must be able to share our files with each other!

It started happening the day Adobe updated InDesignCC to (2017)

Prior to that it was fine. And NOTHING else changed in our work environment from one day to the next OTHER than the cloud-based software update.

We called in to Adobe for help—first they said it was because our files were hosted on a server – adobe doesn’t support it’s product being used to open files on a server—so we went out and invested in external drives.

It’s still happening, and when I called today Adobe says they don’t support their product if files are saved on external drives either.

Any help you can provide is most appreciated.

I couldn't agree more!!! This packaging nightmare is ridiculous! And the whole idea that it is a problem with working off a server?? Oh please... Is Adobe really that incapable of fixing this issue? I have left my share of snarky comments as well...

I just discovered this too. I was able to package multiple documents in a row without closing them, but once I closed any it crashed. My whole team just upgraded to 2017 and this is going to be an issue.

I will say this, the only reason we upgraded was that other divisions we work with upgraded. Nothing helpful was added to CC 2017 as far as our workflow, and the bugs I've encountered seem to be really bad.

I would be curious to know how many of the users experiencing this crash behavior are using Extensis Suitcase. The crashes seem to have begun AFTER installation of Suitcase Fusion Version 18.2.1 (1311). And, if I remove Suitcase's auto-activation plugin from InDesign, the crashing seems to stop. I have not tested this extensively, but I have been unable to reproduce the crash problem with the plugin un-installed.

I'm not using Suitcase--but then, I'm also using InDesign 2014 and having the same problem as you-all are having with 2017!

We are on Suitcase Fusion 18.2.2 – a colleague created a packaged file yesterday and InDesign quit on him. Happens all over our office – pretty random too...
