InDesign Crashes When Adding Long Hyperlinks

I use hyperlinks in a document to access specific pages on external websites.

Workflow:

  • Type the text on which the hyperlink will be applied
  • select the text
  • Right-click, Hyperlinks, New Hyperlink
  • Paste URL, Press Enter

This works without issue until I have hyperlink that is a bit longer. When I press enter after pasting the URL, InDesign crashes. Every time. So I have been able to isolate longer links as the issue. In these situations, I can often find an alternate URL to use instead. In some situations, there is no alternate URL.

Is there a workaround that will enable me to use a longer URL in a hyperlink? Or perhaps a patch, script or plugin?

Yes, the services are free. I use the URL Shortener extension to Chrome. You can pick from a number of services including tinyurl.com and bit.ly. You can also get a QR code if needed.

Can you share an example of the URL that is crashing your InDesign?

Any chance you could use some URL shorting service?

I've never used a URL shortening service. Are they free? If not, it is unlikely my company will pay for it. We send out the links as a courtesy.

Not sure if it includes shorts created for free - or only tracking needs to be paid?

Really? That's disappointing. That means it's a computer issue. I always get notifications about my graphics card being incompatible with photoshop (yet it lets me use it anyway), I bet this probably related. My computer is just too old I guess. I've been trying to get it replaced, but no luck yet. Thanks for the help.

Thanks. I think TinyURL will work as a workaround.
