Hi again,
No reg entries is odd but there aren't any on the other PC I'm running ID on successfully, either! ID was working great on both PC's until today, when I tried opening it up after an absence of a couple of months - maybe I did something to somehting else somewhere that screwed it up with a conflict. I seem to recall I did do system restore in that time, so that's probably it. I will try the procedure you recommend and let you know what happens! If it doesn't work, do you think upgrading to CS5 would help?
Thanks a bunch

Hard to say, and if you don't have CS5 already, it will be hard to find through legitimate channels (check Amazon). CS5.5 is current, and remeber that if you open an old file and save it in either CS5 or CS5.5 if will only open from then on in that version or later (5.5 files do NOT open in 5.0). Export to .idml from either new version will open in CS4, though.

OK Peter, ID now works fine with a new user with admin rights, so it's a user problem. I'd rather not go through all the cleanup process if I can help it, so any idea what I can fix re the user issue? Grant full control to the User folder for example...?
Thanks again

Well I don't see anywhere that you've tried the #1 troubleshooting step: Replace Your Preferences, so that would be next on the agenda. If a new user works and an old one doesn't it's something in the user profile, and hopefully the prefs will take care of it.

Peter,
Nope that didn't work, did a bunch of times, with ctrl alt shift and manually, no change.

Try copying the entire Adobe folders under the two paths (don't recall which verion of Windows you said) from the new profile to the old.

Nope, no good either.

That implies something seriously hosed in the user account or a permissions problem.
I'd, personally try the painful uninstall/reinstall outlined above, but if it's permissions that won't help either, I'd guess, unless the installer sets them, and I'm afraid I really don't know where to tell you to look in the registry or the file system to reset.

BTW, I only have one accoun ton the PC and that is of course admin.

I am working in InDesign CS4 for the mac OSX, have been for years. I have lost workspaces before and have been able to fix them by following the instructions in this forum to trash the old preferences. However, that no longer works. I spent all day yesterday tossing out my user preferences and cache to try to get my workspaces back to no avail. Today I reinstalled CS4 from scratch, 6.0 and wonderfully, it was fixed! Then I went ahead and downloaded the update to indesign 6.05 and I am back to the same miserable place I was yesterday. I set up a "test" user and when logged in as that user the application worked fine, until I got the following error message? I am also getting that FMCore message.
Is there any way you can dicipher what's going on? I'm going to reinstall indesign CS4, v6.0 and leave it at that until I hear what's going on.
As far as I know the account has all the read/write persmissions to all the content but perhaps you could tell me how to check... I didn't see it in the post.

The FMCore messages are related to suitcase. You need to upgrade the font manager to fix that.
