InDesign elements locked into background - cannot be edited

Seemingly randomly - after re-opening an InDesign project - elements [grouped and/or individual] have become inaccessible and 'locked' in the background. What might cause this glitch and how can it be alleviated?

Using InDesign v. 16.3 on x64 PC via Creative Cloud.

There are only a few ways that an item can be locked in InDesign. 

1) It could be on a Master Page

2) The item itself could be locked

3) The layer containing the item could be locked. 

With the info you have given, I would start by checking your Master Pages

I'll just note that any selected object will be locked if CTRL+L is pressed. My first thought is that the OP is somehow, for some reason doing so and not realizing it has an effect.

A ha! I feel like that is exactly what inadvertently happened. Thanks for the heads up; I found the fix.

make the document available for testing.

Put it on Dropbox or a similar service and post the download link.

Otherwise all I can offer is guesswork or pure speculation.
