Just a quick note as to the benefits (and for those other not seeing any) of retaining the 'previous' pdf export filename.
I create hundreds of Technical user guides which are constantly updated.
Each time I save an updated document and create an updated pdf I am presented with the previous export file name eg
xxxxxx v01.pdf
it is then easy to change that to
xxxxxx v02.pdf - etc, etc
this function proves essential for my workflow.

Thanks for the feedback!
I'm it will get passed along to the engineers.

Hi,
Just for comment:
Keeping the ID file same name and the same export-to-pdf settings, it's simple to "tag" the doc version, "marking" the doc itself!
And so, each time the user saves a new version, it's so simple to export it to pdf naming it including its actual (new) version!
[by scripting]

Hi Michel
sorry, I don't understand the process you describe - tagging?
The economy of the system I use is that there is only ever one original file that is constantly updated.
This way I have only hundreds of documents to look after, rather than the possibility of thousands.
I'd be interested in your how your 'scripting' process works

Hi Steve,
I think, Michel means labeling a document.
Something like a Script Label, but done with a document.

Uwe

Hi Uwe & Steve,
Totally! … Cool feature!
This kind of game could be played with 3 Scripts! …
• Script B "control" -- to control the actual version!
Here, version 0, no pdf! …
• Script A "main" -- to export to pdf!
So … version 1! … a pdf file has been created (on the right side)
Some corrections later => version 2!
The user launches the Script A again! … New pdf (v.2)!
… But the op has made an error and needs to make a new pdf v.2!
No problem:
• Script C "reset" -- to change the version number!
Alert message: we come back to the previous version (v.1) and the op could launch Script A again:
the previous pdf (v.2) will be replaced by a new one!
Of course, an automatic back-up of the different InDesign file versions could be included in the Script A "main" (same name as the pdf file)! …
Best,
Michel

Hi Michel,
it seems a sound idea, how does the script work?

When the op launches the Script A "main", the script exports the doc to pdf!
But before this and because it will need to have the version number to give the right name to the future pdf file, it "creates or updates" the "label" of the doc!
You can move the file on another machine, the label is attached to the doc! It's just a kind of mark of the doc!
The user has really nothing to do and he can totally forget the version number! … The doc won't forget it!
Best,
Michel

Hi Michel
I've not used Script labels before, but I can now see how they are useful.
Unfortunately the scripting is beyond me.
Many thanks, Steve
