InDesign is lagging, being very slow, after the latest update

InDesign is lagging after I run the latest update. It takes at least one minute to do any action and is very frustrating.

I noticed that if I change the view settings to Fast Display, it goes back to operating normal but I don't like working with that setting because I can't see the images while I am working on a document. But I thought this might give some extra information on what the issues might be. Anyone has any advices?

I am working on a MacBook Pro with 2,6 GHz Intel Core i7 6 core processor and a 16GB RAM and I never had those kind of issues with Indesign before.

You might experiment with turning off GPU acceleration or else a reset of InDesign. This troubleshooting guide has 4 stages of resetting that you might try.

Hi @valeriac54281776,

Thank you for sharing the details of your experience-I'm sorry to hear about the frustration this issue is causing. It's helpful that you noticed the difference when switching to Fast Display mode; this suggests the lag could be related to how InDesign is handling display settings or rendering images.

To better assist you, could you let us know which macOS version you're currently using?

Additionally, it would be great if you could try running your Mac in Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. Here’s a guide on how to boot your Mac in Safe Mode: Start up your Mac in Safe Mode.

Please test InDesign in Safe Mode and let us know if you notice any improvement. Also, feel free to share more details about your workflow, such as the size of the document you're working on and any specific actions that seem to cause the most lag.

Looking forward to your update!

Thanks,

Abhishek Rao

Hi Abhishek,

Thank you for getting back to me.

I am working on Mac OS Sonoma 14.3.1.

I have this issue whenever I am working with images, when I try to move any image, my Indesign freeze and I get the loading icons and it takes ages to do anything. The bigger the image file size the worst it gets, so for example, if I import a TIFF file it is a nightmare and I am only able to work with TIFF while on Fast Display.
I can try the safe mode tomorrow and see if it improves. if you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Thanks!

Just to add, when I am working with Tiffs in Indesign, I struggle even with the most basic tool like zooming in. Indesign takes 20 seconds to zoom in..

Just in case: make sure to update Sonoma to its latest version (even though it probably won't make a difference for the particular problem you describe).

In addition to other suggestions:

Many users report similar issues of InDesign 2025 slowness on Mac.

While I hope that the steps suggested to you will make a difference, in most cases they don't (judging by numerous reports by other users). In this case, the only known solution is to revert to InDesign 2024 until the issue is resolved.
