InDesign lag and Spinning Beach Ball

I have been having issues for months now with InDesign and Illustrator having extreme lag or get the spinning beach ball. I have a newer machine and have removed preferences (direct Adobe advice) to start fresh, and that still has not fixed this issue. Sometimes all it takes is to click on a layer and I'm stuck waiting. I have removed excess fonts, clean my cache out multiple times a day.

So frustrated with this lagging issue/spinning beach ball.

Can anyone recommend other fixes?
