Indesign lowercase "n" not typing

I am having trouble typing a lowercase "n" in Indesign. Uppercase works fine and I can type on any other app but when I type an "n" everything kind of twitches like it registered that I typed something but no letter appears and the cursor stays there. This started all of a sudden... very confused. I restarted Indesign and my macbook pro with no luck. Anyone have a clue what is going on?

Also, this is only happening with this file. I am able to copy/paste okay too but can't type it.

Perhaps there is a GREP Style applied to the paragraph style that makes the "n" invisible by changing the width of the character using a character style automatically?

Select the text frame where you typed that "n" and use the keyboard shortcut Cmd + y or Ctrl + y (on Windows) to see the text in the Story Editor frame. Is the "n" missing?

I did that and the "n" is still missing. And when I type within that editor I still cannot get an "n"

I am quite sure that you have assigned the “n” key to a shoertcut, but which one? As I wrote, can you either post a screenshot or describe another way what happens when you type a n?

when you type SHIFT + S will there be a change in the applied paragraph style or character style?

I've seen weird things going on with documents where keyboard shortcuts are applied to styles when the document was converted from an older version of InDesign to a newer version.

Try inserting the letter you are having prolems with from the glyphs panel, this should let you know if it is a font or formating (GREP style) issue. (Try also changing font, and use the story editor to make sure that the letter is registered).  If you an insert letters via the glyphs check your hardware.

Most operating systems have a keyboard viewer where you can check that the keyboard responds as it should, also you can try using a different/external keyboard. Note that there are ways to switch layouts to another language layout via the 

Resetting shortcuts so that you invertently have not set a particular key to a shortcut/function is also an issue. Note that there can be shortcuts/macros set at operating system level… sometimes for all applications sometimes application specific. Hope this gives you new places to check, and hopefully isolate, and resolve the issue.

I just had a similar issue (although it was happening both with lowercase and capitalized n), and I found that the issue was fixed if I switched back to Character Style 1, which I hadn't modified. Try deleting any character styles you might have modified and see if that does it.

Rather than switch back to Character Style 1, you should be switching to "None" character style. Remember that it is the Paragraph Style that does 99.9% of the formatting attributes.

I am wondering if you managed to fix the problem, I am having the same issue. It seems to default to a shortcut when I type 'n' and changes the paragrap style to basic paragraph.

Does your paragraph style have a shortcut built into it ? Check under General Settings.

like Mike suggested, go through your styles and identify the style that has a keyboard shortcut applied.

Then redo the style with a new name; do not make a duplicate, create it from scratch. Without a keyboard shortcut.

Remove the one that you identified and exchange it with the new one.

FWIW: Attach a duplicate of your problematic InDesign document to your answer here in the forum so that we can look into the problem. Remove all pages but one and also remove all contents. Just leave the styles in…

This is such a bizarre issue. I can't add a lowercase n as a shortcut, but I can add a capital N (Shift+N).

The shortcut will be listed next the the style it assigns. Right click the style > Edit [Style Name Here] > General, then remove whatever is inside the Shortcut text frame. 

Sh + a lettter really should not be a option for a style shortcut.
