Indesign - Marguee zoom functions like step zoom

New Here ,

Indesign 20.5

Marguee Zoom has stopped functioning the way it used to and now sometimes functions like Step Zoom.

I sometimes want to zoom in as far as I can on a specific spot. I use the Marguee Zoom for that. However, if I draw a box that would zoom it greater than the max zoom of 4000%, it functions as a Step Zoom. It sometimes takes 10 Marguee Zooms to zoom in. This is a change from previous versions.

Is there a fix in the works?

Hi @David27007364tk1q,

Thanks for bringing this up. I tested marquee zoom on my side, and it zooms in directly to the maximum level, not in steps. Could you please share a short screen recording that shows the behavior you're seeing? That would help us better understand the issue. Also, can you confirm the exact operating system you're working with?

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

Hi @David27007364tk1q,

Thanks for sharing the screen recording. Also, thanks to Peter for confirming the behavior on Windows 10 22H2 19045.6332. I've checked on my side, and marquee zoom works as expected on Windows 11, zooming directly to the maximum level without stepping.

Could you let me know if there's a specific reason you're staying on Windows 10? Support for Windows 10 is ending in October 2025, and updating to Windows 11 might resolve this issue. You can refer to Microsoft's end-of-support notice here: https://adobe.ly/3KqfeOz

If possible, please try updating your OS to Windows 11 and check if marquee zoom still behaves like step zoom. This should help determine whether this is a Windows 10–specific regression.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

Not possible to update to Windows 11 in my current environment. That is controlled by IT.

I was able to find another computer in the enterprise that has Windows 11 and was able to test this issue. This issue still exists in Windows 11 on a brand new installed InDesign version 20.5

Hi @David27007364tk1q,

Thanks a lot for confirming and for testing this on another machine as well. While I check with the product team, could you please try resetting your InDesign preferences on your machine and then retest to see if the behavior improves: https://adobe.ly/46uXUzo

It would also be very helpful if you could try isolating the issue by running InDesign in Safe Mode and testing in a brand new user profile to rule out any third-party or profile-level interference. You can find the steps here:
Windows Safe Mode: https://adobe.ly/3Vm0in7
Windows new user: https://adobe.ly/4pmPhQ2

If the issue still persists even after that, I'd recommend completely uninstalling InDesign using the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool and then reinstalling it fresh. You can find details on how and when to use the CC Cleaner Tool here: https://adobe.ly/3ADe2sU

Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Abhishek

LATEST

I've reset my preferences, no change.

The issue existed on a brand new machine with a freshly installed InDesign, no change.

It is also happening to other users in my department.

I am not able to utilize a new user in my current environment, but it is happening with multiple users already.
