InDesign not showing selections of text or objects properly

Community Beginner ,
Jan 27, 2025 Jan 27, 2025

InDesign is refusing to highlight selected text and isn't selecting objects when the pointer is clicked and a selection box dragged around objects. This is proving problematic as I work on a major project.

Windows 11, 7950x CPU, 7800XT GPU, latest drivers and updates applied.

I discovered that it's a side effect introduced when using the new Hide Spreads feature. Once I remove that designation on all pages in the document, highlighting and object selection work normally again.

This is on a standard Windows 11 workstation, no touch screen or tablet involved. Using the latest version of Windows 11, and fully updated InDesign. Configuration is as mentioned in the first post AMD CPU 7950x, AMD GPU 7800 XT. 128 GB RAM.

I found the solution. GPU needs to be turn on under InDesign's Settings.

All documents or only one specific document?

Is it a tablet with a touchscreen?

Hello @CD-BMWCCA

I'm glad to hear that unhiding the spread in your document resolves the issue (please correct me if I'm mistaken). However, I tested the workaround you shared, and InDesign 20.1 works correctly in both conditions (page hidden/unhidden) for me (I am not able to reproduce your issue). Could you please test the issue in Safe Mode to see if any third-party processes are conflicting with InDesign? To do this, first, recreate the issue scenario and then boot your PC in Safe Mode

Let me know how it goes.

I have the same issue on Mac. InDesign 20.1 doesn't show selection when an object is selected.

This only happen on text box, empty box (no image inside) and color box. When I move the mouse away from it, then it shows being selected. In my case, I don't any relation with hide.unhide spread since I don't use them.

Occasionally, My GPU check box is grey out and unchecked when I have tons of video RAM heavy applications opened such as After Effects, Photoshop, Cinema 4D....etc. Because the GPU is not checked. The bug comes back (super annoying). The fix for it now (like the other user mentioned) is to revert InDesign back to version 20.0 which works for me whether GPU is off or on.

Sorry I should have mentioned. It's only been happening in the last week or so since updating to latest Indesign 20.1

Running on a MacBook Air M2, 2022 plus latest version of Sequoia OS 15.2

It's extremely annoying. Handles on selected object don't show until I roll off the object.

Thank you for taking the time to respond - greatly appreciated. I’d already tried that solution, but my GPU preferences option is greyed out with notification: ‘Compatible GPU and Monitor not detected’

I’m running a MacBook Air M2, 2022 plus latest version of Sequoia OS 15.2, so presumably new enough that InDesign should be working okay.

I’ve now rolled back to InDesign version 20.0.

The GPU preference is still greyed out but I don’t have the issue now. Handles on bounding boxes appear immediately as normal when objects are selected.

Something has changed between version 20.0 and 20.1

That GPU feature is buggy. It happens to me occasionally. When gray screen is happening, I usually scroll the InDesign page to other page and then scroll back will fix the screen rendering issue. Also I zoom in and zoom out fixes the issue.
