indesign scripting tutorial

Community Beginner ,
Feb 13, 2017 Feb 13, 2017

Hello.

The standard scripting tutorials provide very basic examples of scripting.

There is no some adequate volume of description of the object model and use cases.

I've found the object tree at side cite Adobe InDesign CS6 (8.0) Object Model JS: Table of Contents

But without some cases it is useless.

Learning UI desktop indesign for this cases is a vasting a lot of time.

Could you please advice some tutorial for scripting with cases showing?

Thanks.

-Alex.

Here are some links for beginners.

I recommend you to begin with Scripting InDesign CS3/4 with JavaScript by Peter Kahrel.

Hi Alex,

1. InDesign CC 2017 DOM documentation compiled by Gregor Fellenz:

InDesign 2017 Script Documentation

2. The ESTK (ExtendScript Toolkit) Help menu can be a source of information.

Start up the ExtendScript Toolkit app and look into "Help".

ESTK-Help-ExtendScript Toolkit Readme.png

ExtendScript Toolkit ReadMe
Adobe Intro To Scripting
JavaScript Tools Guide CC

are PDF files that can be opened with your OS' main PDF reading software:

AdobeIntroductionToScripting.png

All three PDFs are a little outdated here and there when the topics revolve around e.g. the Flash interface for ScriptUI.
In CC 2017 the Flash based parts of ScriptUI are not supported anymore.

3. Video for beginners:

If you can get familiar with German here is a video:

Gerald Singelmann

InDesign-Scripting für Grafiker

Programmieren von Anfang an

(Scripting InDesign for Graphic Designers
Programming – just from the very beginning)

https://www.video2brain.com/de/videotraining/indesign-scripting-fuer-grafiker

4. Books on ExtendScript, GREP and a little XML:

Another German source, Gregor Fellenz' book about InDesign ExtendScript scripting.

Reviewed and discussed in English by Marc Autret:

Indiscripts :: “InDesign automatisieren,” a Scripting Bible (in German)

Finally we have Grand Gamble's book on InDesign Scripting with ExtendScript:

Hi,

In the same time: Follow here the Adobe Forums Javascript Masters!!

There are not many here and I could mention them from memory (but I might forget some)! ...

One thing is sure: they're pretty great!

Thanks to them for their essential help!
