InDesign won't 'Package' from our server

Explorer ,
Nov 30, 2017 Nov 30, 2017
we have a server for our graphics drive, which we remotely access and I have a quick link to this on my desktop.  I double click on this link and it takes me to the server, where I can access all our artwork. There is no problem with this at all. I can open any file via this method. However, once I have opened an InDesign file, clicked on ‘File’ and then ‘Package’ from the dropdown menu, and then clicked ‘Package’ on the window that opens, I get the attached error message and can’t go any further.

The error message is this:

Unable to package the document.

In design cannot access ‘graphics: 'file-name.indd’

Can anyone tell me what has gone wrong and / or how to fix it. I am using the latest Indesign version and also the latest version of Mac OS.

Thank you

The issue has been fixed with Apple’s MacOS High Sierra 10.13.4 Beta (17E139).

You can try out the fix by updating your machine to the beta update from Apple.

Let us know if the issue is fixed for you after aforementioned High Sierra beta update.

I'm having the same problem.

Document originally created/saved on iMac 2017. Edited on MacBook Pro 2016. Both on most current versions of Indesign and Mac OS.

If I try to package the file on the MacBook, I get a "cannot package" message. If I try to package on the iMac, I get a "cannot open - incompatible error 14" message.

If I save as IDML from the MacBook, the iMac can open it and package.

I have tried the patch suggested and trashed preferences.

Serious crimp to the workflow!

I created a file, couldn’t package it so I sent it (unpackaged) to the requestor who worked on the text and sent it back as a IDML and once I opened it in CC, was not able to package again. And the frustrating thing was it was mainly text.

I did rec’d this from a poster on the subject that has posted some work arounds – Haven’t tried it/opened it.

We have 3 Macs networked via Ethernet -- all on High Sierra, all on Indesign CC 13.0.1.

I can open an Indesign file that's saved on one of the other computers and I can save it. But if I try to package it, I get a message that says Indesign can't access the file.

So, reworded, I'm getting the message that it can't open the file it's trying to package.

If I try opening the same file from the Mac it's saved on, I get the message that it can't be opened because someone else has it open -- even though I closed the file and quit Indesign on the other Mac. The only way to open it now is to save an IDML -- the INDD file seems to adopt a permanent "someone else is using this file" status.

The same thing happens with the other Macs and other files... if the file has been saved on another machine, a second one cannot package it.

The only workaround is to save the file to the Mac being used by the person packaging. Then it can be packaged back onto another Mac.

I've checked permissions and file names and pretty much everything that's been suggested. This is crazy and now I'm running into problems with multiple files in multiple places. So I'd really appreciate it if someone could figure out the problem!

thanks.

OK, I finally reverted to Indesign 13.0. That solved the problem on all computers.

So, in case anyone else is reading this, one Mac had High Sierra and another had Sierra.  I had permissions problems on both machines running 13.0.3. I would deduce the problem is in Indesign.

Apple has finally admitted to an OS bug with connecting to SMB servers. Since first responding to this post, I've updated High Sierra to the most recent version (10.13.3), which allegedly addresses the SMB connection issue. I updated InDesign back to 13.0.1 just to try it out, and the packaging function worked just fine. I and several others in my office no longer have packaging issues since running the updates.

My only choices for CC updates appear to be 13.0 and 13.0.3. How did you get a 13.0.1?

As of yesterday, I was running the latest High Sierra (10.13.3) and Indesign 13.0.3. And packaging wasn't working with that combo.

Damn, good question. Maybe 13.0.3 was taken down? Initially I had rolled back to 13.0, stayed with that for a while, updated High Sierra about 2 weeks ago to the latest security patch (it was right after that last Mac malware thing was running around), and then updated InDesign again which took me to 13.0.1. Using the CC menu doesn't show me that I have any updates to run, either.

Are you a beta tester? I feel like I saw something on here a while back about there being a beta version of the upgrade available, but you had to download it directly from the Adobe site, that it wasn't available through the CC app. Maybe you DLed directly from the Adobe site?

Actually, it seems I was mistaken. We were using 13.0.1.

I just updated to 13.0.1. And I still have the issue with packaging. I keep thinking there's some conflict in there that is hidden deep and affects some, not others.

Now I'm reverting to 13.0 again.

I'd love to join the beta program, but my company wouldn't allow it. I'm having the same problems as many of the users in this thread have listed. The issue appears to be in InDesign. Please help.

As already pointed out, the issue is Apple’s to fix; something they’ve apparently done in the upcoming release of High Sierra.

Thanks, BobLevine. I have updated my Mac to the most available OS, and I'm still having this issue. Strangely, none of my teammates are having this issue, and they're on the same OS and CC versions on Macs. Our IT team has said it's Adobe's issue. I'm at a loss here, as fixes that have been posted won't work for me.

It is an Apple High Sierra issue. I'm sure Adobe worked with Apple to get a fix in place. If you can't use the beta, you'll have to wait for Apple to release it.
